Safety tips
Most users on TopMarket are honest people, but as in any online marketplace, you need to be careful. These tips protect you from scams when you buy, sell, rent or look for work.
When buying
- Don't pay before you see the item. Avoid advance payments, especially by bank transfer or money transfer services.
- Meet in a public place and during the day, ideally with another person.
- Check the item carefully before paying: that it works, that it has a warranty, and that it matches the description.
- For cars: ask for the documents, check that the chassis number matches the registration, and if you can, take it to a mechanic.
- A price far below the market is often a sign of a scam.
When renting
- Don't send a deposit before you visit the apartment.
- Make sure you are talking to the owner or a real agency.
- Ask for a written contract that states the rent, the deposit and the terms.
When looking for work
- No serious employer will ask you for money to hire you. Be careful with offers that ask you to pay for "documents", "visas" or "training".
- For jobs abroad, check the company and ask for a contract before you leave.
- Don't give out a copy of your passport or your bank details before you have verified the employer.
When selling
- Don't accept cheques or "overpayments" where the buyer asks you to send back the difference.
- Never share codes you receive by SMS or your bank card details.
